Gay Governor Resigns

Don't ferget u can always e-mail the MooCow with cowments at MooCowMoo@aol.com!!!

Well, I guess the big news, aside from the on-going slaughter in Iraq, is the public resignation of Democratic governor James McGreevey (Moo Jersey).

Apparently McGreevey decided to come out about his sexual orientation becasue of an on-going probe involving him and his lover, and the graft McGreevey used to pay(pay-off??) him:

(Aug. 13) - It was an extraordinary spectacle, one that bosses with a sense of history ordered their young assistants to watch on the television set in the office, one that caused a stunned, lingering silence in hospital waiting rooms and diners and malls. A sitting governor, accompanied by his wife and parents, held a news conference in which he disclosed in a quick sequence that he was gay, had had an extramarital affair with another man and was resigning.

But for all that was remarkable about Gov. James E. McGreevey's personal public confession, there was a more familiar element behind his demise, one he left unsaid: the man who his aides said had had an affair with him had been on the state payroll. That suggestion of patronage sounded somehow almost run-of-the-mill in the tawdry universe of New Jersey politics.

In early 2002, when he was facing criticism for appointing an unknown Israeli citizen named Golan Cipel as his special assistant on homeland security without so much as a routine background check, Gov. James E. McGreevey was asked by a reporter about rumors that he and the man were involved in a sexual relationship.

Mr. McGreevey responded, "Don't be ridiculous!"

But yesterday, in a short announcement in which he said he would resign the governorship, he acknowledged that he was gay and had had an affair with a man. The man, his aides acknowledged, was Mr. Cipel, 35, who, they added, had threatened a sexual harassment suit naming the governor.

The details of their relationship and a clearer picture of Mr. Cipel, a published poet and former naval officer, will emerge in the days ahead. But he occupied a significant position in New Jersey's effort against terrorism with questionable credentials for nearly three months and played a curious role in the McGreevey administration that provoked rumors about their relationship.

Throughout his eight months in the administration, Mr. Cipel remained publicly silent, avoiding the news media and never being asked by the governor to answer its questions.

A sad, sleazy turn of events - let's hope the poeple of Moo Jersey can put this aside & mooove on with the affairs of state. While the MooCow acknowledges the supreme difficulties in being an openly gay politician in this sexually-repressed country, the fact is this affair also smacks of cronie-ism and pay-offs, and so feels that this governor's resignation is very appropriate.

On the bad side of the news comes the story that julia Child has passed away, just 3 days before her 92nd brithday:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A culinary-world giant for two decades, Julia Child brought French cuisine to American kitchens and cooking to the airwaves, becoming such a cultural icon that her kitchen was ultimately donated for display among the nation's cultural treasures in Washington.

The beloved author of a dozen cookbooks and star of numerous televised cooking shows died Thursday at the age of 91 at her home near Santa Barbara, California, according to a spokesman for her publisher, Alfred A Knopf.
Top chefs and even the US president praised her Friday for her role in elevating Americans' culinary sense of adventure, for her dedication to teaching the culinary arts, and her personal warmth and lack of pretension.

Julia was a woman of class, dignity, and good food! She had moore class in her toe nail clippings than in all of Martha Stewart's venomous heart. An-udder giant falls be the wayside...
